Your resume is your introduction to a potential employer, and as such, you want to make sure that it includes all the important information that the employer needs to evaluate your suitability for the role that you’re applying for. Writing your resume is a process that commands your full attention so you’re able to get the most out of it, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In this article, we’ll show you the step-by-step process of creating a standout resume to increase your chances of being hired.

Why is building a resume important?

Building a resume is important because it provides an initial impression of you as a job candidate to a prospective employer. A resume is a tool for giving potential employers a description of your professional interests, experiences and accomplishments as well as information about your skills and education in an easily digestible single-page document that shows how you can contribute to the company’s success.

Building a professional, polished resume is important for prospective employers and ATS programs to quickly be able to recognize the important keywords and skills that the employer is seeking in a new employee’s repertoire. Since employers are sent hundreds of resumes, one that is clean, organized and easily scannable is more likely to get a second look and hopefully an interview.

How to build a resume

When you build your resume, bear in mind that it should provide a clean, legible, focused summary of your overall professional suitability. To ensure that your resume is formatted cleanly and contains the appropriate information, there are resume templates and builders available online, including one from “Chemical Engineering Jobs (ICEng)”. Have your contact information, past five years of employment, education, skills and training, certifications and credentials ready before you begin.

You can edit your resume at any time by clicking the pencil icon on the section you want to edit.

6. Complete assessments

Finally, when you scroll to the bottom of the resume, you can click on “view all assessments” to take “Chemical Engineering Jobs (ICEng)” Assessments, short quizzes that are meant to evaluate and showcase your skills. Make sure to include your biggest or most recent notable accomplishment in your field.


This section lets employers know where you have worked, when you worked there and what responsibilities you held in your roles. This helps them evaluate how your experience aligns with the company’s values and what they are looking for in an employee.

To complete this section, make sure to maintain consistency in your formatting, keep it concise and easily readable. Begin by listing the job titles you’ve held in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent position and working backward. Include your job title, company, city, start and end dates of employment and a short bulleted list of the top responsibilities and accomplishments for each job.

Volunteer work

Volunteer work related to the jobs you’re applying for goes here unless you have volunteered to avoid an employment gap. In that case, list your volunteer work with the jobs you have held.


List the degrees you’ve earned in reverse chronological order, starting with the highest level first with graduation or expected graduation dates and name of the educational institution from which you earned your degree. If you’re still pursuing a degree and have no real work experience, you can place this section above your work history. You can list your GPA if you graduated somewhat recently and it’s higher than 3.5.


This section will include any certifications you have earned. Include the certification, year earned and administering body, if applicable.


Mention any awards or recognitions you have earned here. They show the employer that you are a well-credentialed candidate who has been recognized for your accomplishments.


This section should include your skills that are relevant to the position for which you’re applying. You can typically find required or preferred skills in the job listing posted by the employer. Refer to them when listing your qualifications naming your most closely-related skills and abilities in a bulleted list.
